Support Program

Children at Queen of Apostles School have access to support through their class teacher. Support staff cater for those students with individual learning needs as identified through the analysis of data.

A comprehensive educational program is provided by the school to students from a variety of backgrounds. There is a strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy which incorporates intervention and support for children who require extra assistance.

MINILIT

This program is based on small group instruction (5 students) and runs four days a week. It is targeted towards a group of Year 1 and Year 2 children who require further support with reading. The program takes about 20 weeks to complete, with four lessons of up to 60 minutes per week and includes regular curriculum-based measures to monitor the progress of the students.

TOE BY TOE PROGRAM

This program is a highly structured reading program that teaches basic literacy skills to learners of all ages, using a phonics-based method. The programme is a series of step-by-step activities and is used daily for 10 minutes with students from Year 2 onwards who have struggled with phonetic awareness. It takes approximately five to six months to complete the entire programme.

CARS AND STARS

This program is a powerful combination of assessment and instruction that works effectively together to improve the student’s reading comprehension. This intervention is based on explicitly teaching reading comprehension strategies that a student is struggling to understand. The instruction is highly scaffolded and targeted depending on the student’s individual needs.

SPECIAL NEEDS

Queen of Apostles is an inclusive school which caters for Students with a Disability who are accessing the West Australian school curriculum. A Learning Support Coordinator works in assisting the children and their families to access therapies, funding and learning strategies. Assisting the children in the class, dependent on their learning needs, are Teacher Assistants who are passionate about helping the children in their care reach the individual learning goals developed between the school, the home and relevant outside agencies.
